On Monday, six staffers who serve the highly controversial “Squad” Congress members were arrested by Capitol Police for harassing high-level Democrats, presumably for not being progressive enough.
The staffers decided to stage a protest inside the office of Democrat Chuck Schumer, who presently serves as the Senate Majority leader. The purpose of the protest apparently served to demand Schumer resume various negotiations on a major climate bill, as reported by Axios.
The staffers serve for an array of highly controversial House representatives, including Representatives Cori Bush, Jamaal Bowman, Ilhan Omar, and others, several of whom are well known for their vehement opposition to the police and other extreme positions.
Earlier in the month, Schumer indicated that discussions regarding government spending on climate change had reached an impasse with Senator Joe Manchin, a moderate Democrat who has played a key role in blocking many of the Democrats’ more extreme agendas.
Schumer indicated that he would continue to try to work with Manchin in order to achieve a compromise, but the staffers for the “Squad” members were dissatisfied by this response.
According to Saul Levin, a policy advisor for Bush, “we Hill staffers are peacefully protesting Dem leaders INSIDE,” adding that “to [his] knowledge, this has never been done.”
In addition to bragging about staging the first major protest inside a Democrat’s office, Levin also added that the nation has never seen “a climate catastrophe,” which is why they have decided to “[meet] the moment.”
Levin appeared annoyed that Schumer is apparently “giving up,” but he added that the rest of the staffers “are going to live through the climate crisis.”
Such a comment is a clear dig towards older Democrats, with the implication being that they themselves do not have to deal with the fiasco of climate change as it unfolds.
Staffers have also addressed President Joe Biden and Schumer jointly, writing a letter that declared they have “worked tirelessly to achieve a safe and livable future,” making clearly liberal use of the word “tirelessly.”
“Meanwhile, you have refused to declare a climate emergency,” the staffers whined to senior party leadership.
