Boston Under Fire: HUD Steps Up in Housing Probe

The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has launched an important investigation into the city of Boston. At the heart of the matter are concerns that Boston may have used federal housing funds in a way that violates both the Fair Housing Act and Title VI of the Civil Rights Act. This is not just a local issue—it’s a constitutional one. It goes to the very heart of what it means to treat all Americans equally under the law.

According to HUD, Boston’s housing policies have been shaped by a growing trend known as DEI—diversity, equity, and inclusion. But instead of ensuring fairness for everyone, HUD says Boston may have crossed a legal line by giving race-based preferences in its housing programs. In simple terms, that means some people may have been favored over others in getting housing help, not because they needed it most, but because of their race.

That’s not how our system is supposed to work. The Constitution guarantees equal protection under the law. The Civil Rights Act and the Fair Housing Act were put in place to make sure no one is treated differently because of their skin color. That includes people of all races. The law doesn’t allow for one group to be lifted up by pushing another down.

HUD Secretary Scott Turner made it clear that this kind of “warped mentality,” as he called it, won’t go unchallenged. He said HUD will shine a light on these policies and make sure Boston complies with federal law. That’s the kind of leadership our Constitution demands—one that defends individual rights, not group preferences.

Boston’s housing strategy, HUD says, set a goal that at least 65% of homeownership opportunities should benefit BIPOC households—that stands for Black, Indigenous, and People of Color. Now, helping people is a good thing. But when help is given based on race instead of income or need, that becomes discrimination. It’s discrimination even if it’s done in the name of equity.

The government shouldn’t be in the business of picking winners and losers based on race. That’s social engineering, not justice. And it’s exactly what our founders warned against. They believed in equal rights, not special rights. When government steps in to favor one group over another, freedom suffers.

This investigation also comes at a time when housing markets are under pressure from other federal policies. Secretary Turner rightly pointed to the effects of unchecked illegal immigration—another failure of the Biden administration. When millions of people cross the border illegally, housing becomes more scarce. Prices go up. And it’s everyday Americans—especially low-income families—who are pushed out.

HUD’s own report, the “Worst Case Housing Needs Report,” shows how tough things have become for many Americans trying to find a decent place to live. Secretary Turner didn’t shy away from the truth: these problems didn’t come out of nowhere. They were made worse by policies from the Biden era that ignored common sense and put ideology ahead of results.

Now, under President Trump’s renewed leadership, we’re seeing a return to constitutional principles. HUD is stepping up to protect civil rights—not by dividing people into racial groups, but by standing for fairness and equal treatment for all. That’s what the law requires, and that’s what justice demands.

The bottom line is simple: housing help should go to those who need it most, not those who check a particular racial or ethnic box. That’s not only the right thing to do—it’s the legal thing to do. HUD’s investigation is a welcome step in restoring fairness, equality, and the rule of law to American housing policy. And it’s a reminder to all cities: federal funds come with a duty to follow the Constitution.
