A swarm of mysterious drones was recently spotted flying over northern Germany, and it has sparked serious concern across Europe. These drones flew over critical areas, including a power plant and a naval base in the state of Schleswig-Holstein. This is not just a small issue—it strikes at the heart of national security for Germany and all NATO members.
According to German officials, these drones did not appear by accident. They seemed to be surveying important sites, possibly collecting information or testing defenses. That’s a serious problem. It is likely that these drones came from Russia, though the Kremlin denies it. But this is not the first time. Similar drone sightings and airspace violations have been reported in Poland, Denmark, Estonia, Romania, and other NATO countries in recent months.
This is what some call “hybrid warfare.” That means the enemy uses tricks, technology, and covert methods—not just tanks and bombs—to test and weaken us. It is a way to avoid open war while still attacking. And if these drones are part of that kind of attack, we must treat it as a threat to the whole alliance.
Let’s not forget what NATO is all about. It was formed after World War II to protect its members. The key idea is in Article 5 of the NATO treaty: If one ally is attacked, all others must come to its defense. That is the very foundation of the alliance. An attack on one is an attack on all.
President Donald Trump has made it clear that any aircraft or drone invading NATO airspace should be shot down. He is right. We cannot allow our enemies to fly freely over our military bases and power plants. If we let that happen, we are inviting more danger. Strength is the only language tyrants understand.
Sadly, many European leaders have been slow to respond. Germany’s Chancellor Friedrich Merz admitted they still don’t know exactly where the drones came from. But the signs are obvious. Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky says Russia is even using oil tankers—part of a so-called “shadow fleet”—to launch and control these drones. That means these tankers could be floating command centers for attacks on NATO countries. If that’s true, those ships should be banned from European waters immediately.
NATO has said that its commitment to defense is “ironclad,” and that it will use all necessary tools to protect its members. That sounds good, but words alone are not enough. We need action. We need stronger air defenses. We need to track and stop drones before they get near our critical sites. And we need to send a clear message: We will not be intimidated.
This is a test of will. It is a test of our resolve. The Constitution gives our President the duty to defend this nation and to stand with our allies. President Trump is doing just that. He is showing strength, not weakness. And that’s what keeps us free.
The EU will be meeting in Copenhagen this week to discuss all of this. Let’s hope they act wisely. But more than that, we must remember that liberty is never safe by accident. It takes courage, vigilance, and the willingness to stand up to evil.
