When tragedy strikes, most people respond with sympathy and respect. That’s how a healthy society holds together. But sadly, some politicians today would rather score political points than show basic human decency. This week, Representative Ilhan Omar of Minnesota showed just how far the left will go to push their agenda, even after the death of a fellow American.
Charlie Kirk, a well-known conservative speaker and advocate for free speech, was assassinated. His wife and children are grieving. Many Americans, including President Donald Trump and Representative Nancy Mace, expressed sorrow and support for his family. That’s the right thing to do. But instead of joining in unity, Ilhan Omar used the moment to attack Kirk and everyone who supported him. She called them names and even used foul language on live TV. “These people are full of s**t,” she said, with no shame.
Let’s be clear: this is not how leaders are supposed to act. In times of mourning, we should come together, not tear each other apart.
Omar didn’t stop at insulting Kirk’s supporters. She criticized his beliefs, like the idea that guns save lives or that Juneteenth shouldn’t be a federal holiday. Whether you agree or disagree with those views, they are opinions protected by the First Amendment. That’s what freedom of speech is all about. But instead of debating ideas, Omar tried to silence and shame anyone who thinks differently than she does.
She even accused President Trump of inciting violence. That’s a serious charge, and one she has no proof of. Meanwhile, Charlie Kirk was the one who was murdered—a man who spent his life giving speeches and encouraging people to think for themselves. That is what real courage looks like.
This kind of political name-calling has no place in a free country. The Constitution guarantees every one of us the right to speak freely, worship freely, and live without fear of government targeting us for our beliefs. But the modern left, led by people like Ilhan Omar and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, doesn’t seem to care about those rights. They want to control what people say, what people believe, and who gets to speak at all.
Omar said she had empathy for Kirk’s children, but her actions showed something else. True empathy means treating others with respect, even when you disagree. That’s what makes America different from many other places in the world. We settle our differences with words, not violence. And when someone is killed, we don’t mock the people mourning him. We stand with them.
Too many on the left have forgotten this. They rush to blame conservatives, even before all the facts are known. Just like Ocasio-Cortez did when she said Trump’s words were to blame for Kirk’s death. That’s not justice—that’s politics. Real justice is found in the courtroom, not on cable news.
Law enforcement is still looking for the person responsible for Kirk’s assassination. We should all pray for justice, for his family, and for peace in our country. But we must also speak up when our leaders fail to show the basic respect that every American deserves, even in death.
We live in a nation built on the idea that all people are created equal and that our rights come from God, not government. Those truths are worth defending, even when it’s hard—especially when it’s hard. In moments like this, we must remember who we are and what we stand for.
Let us honor Charlie Kirk’s memory not just with words, but by standing firm for liberty, for truth, and for the Constitution. That’s how we keep this republic strong.
