Illegal Alien Professor Arrested: Trump’s Justice Restored

The Constitution gives our federal government a clear job: protect the people of the United States. That includes making sure our borders are secure and our laws are enforced. When someone sneaks into our country, breaks the law, and then hides behind a teaching job at a college, the system has failed. But under President Trump, law and order are being restored. The recent arrest of Sumith Gunasekera is proof of that.

Gunasekera, an illegal immigrant from Sri Lanka, should never have been allowed to step foot in our country—let alone serve as a college professor. He had a criminal record in Canada, including a conviction for sexual interference with a minor. That’s not just a red flag. That’s a blaring siren. Yet somehow, he returned to the U.S. on a student visa, slipped through the cracks, and ended up teaching young adults at Ferris State University in Michigan.

Let’s be clear: this man had no lawful right to be in the United States. And worse, he posed a threat to students. According to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Gunasekera was first arrested in Canada in 1998 for uttering death threats. Just days later, he was arrested again—this time for crimes involving a child. He was convicted and served time. Years later, he was arrested again in Las Vegas for lewd behavior. Yet he still managed to stay in this country and land a job in higher education.

How does this happen in America? It happens when immigration laws are ignored or weakened. It happens when background checks fail or are not properly enforced. And it happens when dangerous individuals are allowed to use our education system as safe harbor.

Thankfully, under President Trump, ICE is doing its job again. Agents tracked Gunasekera down in Detroit and took him into custody. Assistant Secretary of Homeland Security Tricia McLaughlin said it best: “His days of exploiting the immigration system are over.” That’s what strong leadership looks like. That’s what happens when we put the safety of Americans first.

Ferris State University has now placed Gunasekera on leave. That’s a start, but it should never have come to this. A man with a known criminal past involving sex crimes should never have been put in a position of trust with young people. We have to ask: who was watching the gates? Who failed to protect the students?

This is not just a Michigan problem. It’s a national problem. The education system has been infiltrated by illegal immigrants who lied about their status and their past. Gunasekera is not the only example. ICE also arrested Ian Andre Roberts, a former school superintendent in Iowa, who turned out to be living in the U.S. illegally with an open deportation order.

The truth is simple: America is a nation of laws. If we don’t enforce those laws, we put our citizens in danger. If we allow criminals to hide behind college degrees or job titles, then we’ve lost sight of what justice means.

This administration is choosing law over lawlessness. It is choosing truth over political correctness. And it is choosing the American people over those who seek to harm them.

We must continue to support ICE and other law enforcement officers who are doing the hard work of cleaning up the mess left by years of weak immigration policy. Every illegal immigrant with a dangerous past must be found and deported. No exceptions.

Let this be a warning to those who think they can game the system: under President Trump, the days of hiding in plain sight are over. This is a new era—one built on safety, justice, and the rule of law. And that’s exactly what the Constitution calls for.
