Trump to Meet Democrat Leaders Over Shutdown Crisis

President Trump has agreed to sit down with top Democrat leaders Chuck Schumer and Hakeem Jeffries this week to talk about the possibility of a government shutdown. The meeting comes as Congress nears a September 30 deadline to pass a funding bill. If lawmakers can’t agree by then, the federal government may have to shut down.

Now, before we get lost in political finger-pointing, let’s remember something important: Under our Constitution, Congress—not the President—is in charge of spending. Article I, Section 9, clearly says that “No money shall be drawn from the Treasury, but in Consequence of Appropriations made by Law.” That means it’s Congress’s job to pass funding bills. The President can’t spend a dime unless Congress says so.

So why are Schumer and Jeffries blaming President Trump for a shutdown? That’s the question every American should be asking.

Just last week, Senate Democrats—except for two of them—voted against a temporary funding bill that would have kept the government running through November. That bill was reasonable. It kept spending at current levels and gave everyone more time to work out a long-term deal. But the Democrats rejected it. Why? Because they want more money—$1.5 trillion more, to be exact—for things like expanded government healthcare and so-called “climate programs.”

Let’s be clear: That’s not compromise. That’s a wish list.

Rather than work with Republicans, Schumer and Jeffries decided to send a letter to President Trump. In it, they accused him of trying to “gut healthcare” and demanded he meet with them—like he’s the one holding up the process. But the truth is, Democrats walked away from bipartisan talks. That’s not leadership. That’s a political stunt.

A White House official put it plainly: “This letter shows desperation.”

And it does. When Democrats reject a fair funding plan and then accuse the President of causing a shutdown, they’re not trying to solve problems. They’re trying to shift the blame.

President Trump, however, is showing what leadership looks like. Even though the Democrats are playing games, he’s agreed to meet with them. He knows the American people deserve a functioning government. But he also knows we can’t keep giving in to every demand from the left just to avoid a shutdown.

Let’s remember what’s at stake here. Every time Congress threatens a shutdown, everyday Americans suffer. National parks close. Federal workers go without pay. Services slow down. But none of that matters to career politicians who use shutdown threats to push their political agendas.

That’s why it’s important to stand firm. The Constitution gives Congress the power to control spending, but it also expects them to act responsibly. Throwing away a good funding bill just to score political points is not responsible. It’s reckless.

President Trump is doing his part by agreeing to meet. Now it’s time for Democrats to do theirs. That starts by coming back to the negotiating table in good faith—not with threats, not with press releases, and not with demands for trillions in new spending.

In the end, this isn’t just about politics. It’s about whether our leaders will honor the Constitution and serve the American people—or keep playing games that hurt us all. The Founders gave us a system where no one branch of government can hold the rest hostage. If Congress won’t do its job, the American people will hold them accountable—just like the Constitution intended.
