U.S. Spy Planes Guard Against North Korean Threat

America must always be ready to defend itself. That is one of the core duties of the federal government under our Constitution. Right now, our military is putting that principle into action as North Korea once again threatens peace with its dangerous missile program. For five days in a row, a U.S. Air Force spy plane has been flying long missions near the Korean Peninsula. These flights are not for show. They are for gathering the kind of intelligence that could one day save American lives.

The aircraft being used is called the RC-135S, or “Cobra Ball.” It is a flying sensor station, built to track and collect data on ballistic missiles. It can spot a missile from far away and record details like its speed, path, and launch point. This is vital information. If North Korea were to launch a missile toward us or our allies, this data would help us stop it.

The plane has been flying out of Kadena Air Base, located on Okinawa, a Japanese island in the Pacific. Okinawa has long served as a key location for U.S. forces in the region. From there, the Cobra Ball has flown missions lasting up to 13 hours, circling over the Sea of Japan. In some flights, it was refueled in the air so it could stay on mission longer. That shows how serious the threat is and how determined our military is to watch it closely.

Why is this happening now? Because North Korea is once again making moves that raise concern. Satellite images show new activity at a secret nuclear site. North Korea’s leader, Kim Jong Un, was recently seen visiting a missile factory. And he is now in China, likely showing off his military power during a parade. These are not the actions of a peaceful nation. They are the actions of a regime that has no respect for international rules or human life.

North Korea has already developed long-range missiles that could reach the United States mainland. The Defense Intelligence Agency warns that these threats will only grow more dangerous over the next ten years. That is why the data collected by the RC-135S is so important. It helps our military and our leaders understand what North Korea is doing. And it helps us prepare to defend against it.

We should not forget that national defense is one of the few powers the Constitution gives clearly to the federal government. Article I, Section 8 gives Congress the authority to raise armies, provide for the common defense, and declare war if needed. Article II makes the President the Commander in Chief. These powers are not meant to be used lightly, but they are meant to be used when our safety is at risk.

Thankfully, under President Trump’s leadership, our military is once again focused on strength and readiness. We are not bowing to global pressure or pretending that dictators like Kim Jong Un can be reasoned with. We are watching. We are preparing. And we are standing guard over our nation and our allies.

Some may say these spy flights are too aggressive. But history teaches us that weakness invites danger. Ronald Reagan once said, “Peace through strength.” That remains true today. By showing that we are alert and capable, we make it less likely that North Korea will act recklessly.

In the end, our freedom depends on our willingness to protect it. The brave men and women flying these missions are doing just that. They are not only collecting data. They are defending liberty, standing watch over the free world, and upholding the promise of our Constitution—to provide for the common defense and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity.
