Ukraine Rejects China’s Peace Role—Trust Issues Explained

The war in Ukraine continues to be a major problem for the world. Many countries have tried to help bring peace, but not all of them have the right intentions. Recently, Russia suggested that China could help guarantee Ukraine’s security as part of a peace deal. But Ukraine has firmly said no. President Volodymyr Zelensky does not trust China, and for good reason.

China claims it wants to be “fair and objective” in helping with the Ukraine crisis. A spokeswoman for China’s foreign ministry said that China is open to playing a “constructive role” in the peace process. But China’s actions tell a different story. Ever since Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, China has not done anything to stop the violence. In fact, it has helped Russia in many ways. China has bought huge amounts of Russian oil, helping to keep Russia’s economy strong even while the West put sanctions in place. China has also opened its market to Russian drones, which can be used in war.

Zelensky remembers all this. He knows that while China may speak about peace, its support for Russia shows where it really stands. That’s why Ukraine is not willing to accept China as a peace partner or a security guarantor. Zelensky said plainly that Ukraine needs help from countries that have stood by them—not ones that have helped the enemy.

China’s history on this issue also doesn’t inspire trust. Back in 1994, Ukraine gave up its nuclear weapons in exchange for promises that its borders would be respected. This deal was called the Budapest Memorandum. China wasn’t an official signer, but it did support the agreement at the time. Yet when Russia took over Crimea in 2014, China did nothing to stop it. And when Russia launched a full invasion in 2022, China again stayed silent—or worse, helped behind the scenes. That’s not how a peaceful nation acts.

Russia’s foreign minister, Sergey Lavrov, says that any peace deal must include Russia and that bringing in UN Security Council members like China is the way forward. But Ukraine and its real allies know better. Lavrov’s plan is a “road to nowhere,” as it leaves out the truth about who started the war and who has helped it continue.

Thankfully, Ukraine is not alone. Several European countries, along with the United States, are working on a new plan to protect Ukraine. Some are talking about a defense agreement similar to NATO’s Article 5, which says that an attack on one country is an attack on all. This kind of agreement would show Russia that any future aggression would be met with serious consequences. That’s the kind of support Ukraine needs—strong, clear, and backed by action.

President Donald Trump has taken a leading role in trying to bring this war to an end. His administration is working to broker a deal that protects Ukraine’s borders and security while also ending the bloodshed. But that can’t happen if bad actors like China are allowed to play a central role. A true peace can only happen when those involved believe in sovereignty, liberty, and the rule of law.

In the end, Ukraine’s rejection of China is not just about politics. It’s about trust. It’s about standing with nations that value freedom and rejecting those who only pretend to. China may want to appear neutral, but its actions speak louder than words. And in this fight, the world must choose: stand with the aggressor, or stand with the people fighting for their land and liberty.

America’s founders believed in the right of nations to be free and secure. That principle still matters today. And it is our duty to support those who defend it.
