China’s Aggression Nears Dangerous Boiling Point in Sea

Tensions are rising again in the South China Sea, where China is flexing its military muscles around a key reef claimed by the Philippines. This reef, known as Second Thomas Shoal, is part of the Spratly Islands—an area that many nations, including China, Vietnam, Malaysia, and the Philippines, say belongs to them. But here’s the catch: Second Thomas Shoal sits well inside the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone. That means the Philippines has the legal right to use the resources there, under international law.

Back in 1999, the Philippines ran an old warship aground on that reef to stake its claim. That ship, the BRP Sierra Madre, still sits there today, with a small group of Filipino troops aboard. China calls this illegal, but the Philippines insists it is defending its national territory. And that’s where things get serious.

In recent days, the Philippines reported an “unusual” buildup of Chinese ships and boats near the shoal. This included five large coast guard cutters, nine boats from China’s maritime militia, and smaller fast boats with what appeared to be new heavy weapons. Chinese ships were caught on camera laying nets and performing water-cannon drills. These nets could block boats from moving freely—a dangerous move in busy waters.

The Philippine military says 25 Chinese vessels remain in the area. That’s a show of force that cannot be ignored. Rear Admiral Roy Vincent Trinidad, a top Philippine officer, said it’s unusual for China to so openly display weapons and block movement. This isn’t just a routine patrol. It’s a message—and a threat.

China, of course, blames the Philippines. A Chinese coast guard spokesman accused the Sierra Madre of sending out small boats to provoke Chinese forces. But let’s be clear: under the rules of the sea, the Philippines has every right to be there. They are protecting their own waters, not invading someone else’s.

This is not the first time China has acted like a bully in the South China Sea. Last year, Chinese ships used water cannons against Filipino boats trying to resupply the Sierra Madre. Some Filipino sailors were even hurt. And just last month, a Chinese navy destroyer collided with a smaller Philippine ship near a different reef. These are not accidents. They are part of a pattern.

Why does China act this way? Some experts think China is trying to save face after that recent collision. They say Chinese leaders want to look strong at home, so they show power abroad. But this kind of behavior is risky. It brings the world closer to war—especially since the Philippines is a treaty ally of the United States.

That’s right. If China attacks the Philippines, it could force the United States to step in. Our country has promised to defend the Philippines if it is attacked. That’s not just talk. It’s a legal promise. And that means any misstep by China could trigger a much larger conflict.

This is why America must stand firm. We cannot let China push our allies around. We must support the Philippines in defending its lawful territory. And we must remind China that international law still matters, even in the face of rising power.

The Founders believed in peace through strength. President Trump understands that. He knows that bullies back down when they see that freedom will fight back. In the South China Sea, that philosophy must guide us. We don’t want war—but we won’t be pushed around either.

Let the world see that America keeps its word. Let China see that the age of lawless expansion is over. And let the brave men aboard the Sierra Madre know: they do not stand alone.
