Trump Weighs Major Shift in Federal Marijuana Policy

President Donald Trump is considering a big change in how the federal government treats marijuana. Right now, marijuana is listed as a Schedule I drug. That means the government sees it as very dangerous, with no accepted medical use. It’s grouped with drugs like heroin and LSD. But that may soon change.

New reports say President Trump is thinking about lowering marijuana to a Schedule III drug. This would mean it’s seen as having a lower chance of abuse and some accepted medical uses. Drugs in this group include ketamine and steroids. This change could help doctors and researchers learn more about how marijuana might help people with certain illnesses.

Some people say Trump’s decision may be linked to support from marijuana businesses. At a recent fundraiser at his New Jersey golf club, marijuana company leaders were present. One of them, the CEO of Trulieve, talked to Trump about expanding medical marijuana research. Other big names, like the CEO of Pfizer and cryptocurrency leaders, were also there.

But let’s not be quick to judge this move as just political. The truth is, our country’s drug laws need to be rooted in facts, not fear. The Constitution never gave the federal government the power to control what plants people grow or use in their own states. That power rightly belongs to the states and the people.

The Controlled Substances Act, passed in 1970, gave Washington too much control over drugs, including marijuana. For decades, the federal government has treated marijuana as if it were as harmful as heroin. But science and state laws tell a different story. Many states have already legalized marijuana for medical or even recreational use. They did so through the will of the people, not through unelected bureaucrats in D.C.

President Trump’s possible change is a step back toward respecting the rights of states and individuals. It doesn’t mean he’s calling for full legalization, but it does mean he’s open to rethinking how the federal government handles this issue. That’s important. It shows leadership that listens and adapts based on facts and freedom.

Some critics say this is just about money or votes. But Trump has always stood for putting America first. If he believes that moving marijuana to a lower drug category will help patients, help state economies, and reduce unnecessary federal power, then that’s a good reason to support the change.

We must also be clear: lowering marijuana’s classification doesn’t make it harmless. Like alcohol or tobacco, it can still be misused. But treating it fairly under the law allows better research, safer use, and smarter decisions.

It’s worth noting that Trump also supported a Florida measure to legalize marijuana in that state. Though it didn’t pass, his support shows he respects the right of states to decide for themselves. This is how our system is supposed to work. The Founders never imagined a federal government that would ban a plant across all 50 states.

Abigail Jackson, a spokeswoman for the White House, said it best: the president is doing what’s best for the American people. That includes making sure our laws match reality and protect freedom.

In the end, this move is about more than marijuana. It’s about restoring balance between the states and Washington. It’s about putting science over scare tactics. And it’s about trusting free people to make choices within their own communities.

If President Trump moves forward with this change, it will be another reminder that he listens to the facts, respects the Constitution, and puts the people first.
