Trump Takes Bold Action in D.C. Chaos Crisis

Washington, D.C., our nation’s capital, was intended by the Founders to be a beacon of order and republican virtue—a city devoted not to any one state, but to the Union itself. Today, however, this federal district has become a shameful example of what happens when political ideology and bureaucratic paralysis override the most basic function of government: to secure the safety and liberty of its citizens.

The recent brutal assault on Edward Coristine, a former software engineer known for his role in the early reform efforts of President Trump’s second term, is not just an isolated incident—it is a symptom of a broader collapse in law and order in the District of Columbia. Victimized by a group of violent teenagers in what should have been a safe, secure area of the capital, Coristine’s attack exemplifies the chaos that has been allowed to fester under local mismanagement.

In response, President Trump has taken decisive constitutional action, placing the D.C. police under federal control and deploying the National Guard to restore order. Critics may wring their hands over “federal overreach,” but such claims ignore the plain text of the Constitution and the unique status of the District of Columbia. Article I, Section 8, Clause 17 gives Congress plenary authority “to exercise exclusive Legislation in all Cases whatsoever” over the federal district. That power includes the authority to step in when local governance fails to protect life, liberty, and property.

Let us be clear: the District of Columbia is not a state. It never was, and it was never meant to be. The Founders were intentional in creating a neutral seat of government, insulated from the political pressures of any individual state. That neutrality comes with a constitutional responsibility. When the local government of D.C.—riddled with progressive policies, lax enforcement, and a warped sense of justice—fails to provide basic safety, it is not only within the President’s authority but his duty to intervene.

The Founders understood that liberty cannot survive in a climate of lawlessness. James Madison, in Federalist No. 51, wrote that “Justice is the end of government. It is the end of civil society.” When a 14-year-old can, with impunity, steal a car or assault a citizen on a public street, justice has clearly failed. And when justice fails, liberty is the next casualty.

The District’s political leaders have proven themselves unwilling or unable to stem the tide of violence. They have prioritized ideology over order, and the results are catastrophic: rising crime, demoralized law enforcement, and innocent citizens paying the price with their safety and dignity. Washington, D.C., has become a cautionary tale in what happens when progressive experiments are allowed to override plain common sense and constitutional responsibility.

Federal intervention in D.C. is not only justified—it is necessary. The Constitution vests Congress and, by extension, the executive branch with full authority over the District. President Trump’s action is not only within his rights—it is a welcome return to constitutional fidelity after years of neglect and decay. Indeed, the President has sworn an oath to preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution. That includes defending the lives and liberties of citizens within the very city tasked with upholding our national laws.

If Washington, D.C., cannot police itself, then the federal government must do so. That is not tyranny; it is constitutional order. That is not authoritarianism; it is the rule of law. And it is high time the federal district, which houses the government of the people, once again becomes a place where the people can live, work, and walk in peace.

The defense of liberty begins with the defense of law. And in reclaiming D.C. from violence and disorder, the Trump administration is doing what the Founders would have expected: restoring peace through constitutional authority and moral clarity. Let this be a wake-up call—not just for D.C., but for every American city flirting with lawlessness. Where government fails to secure liberty, the Constitution demands correction. And correction, at long last, has come.
