Kamala Drops Out of Chaotic California Governor Race

The political circus in California just got a little more chaotic—and a little more revealing. Kamala Harris, the failed vice president and former California attorney general, has officially backed out of the 2026 race for governor. That’s right. After months of speculation, she’s taken a pass on returning to her home state to fix the very mess she helped create. The same Kamala Harris who cackled her way through the border crisis and vanished during national emergencies now claims she’s stepping aside “for now.” Translation: Her presidential ambitions outweigh any real commitment to California.

Let’s be clear—California is a disaster under Democrat rule. Homelessness has exploded, taxes are sky-high, crime is rampant, and businesses are fleeing in droves. It’s a state run by elitists for elitists, while working families are left holding the bag. And yet, with Harris out, the Democrat bench stepping forward isn’t exactly inspiring confidence.

Lieutenant Governor Eleni Kounalakis, once considered a top contender, has also stepped aside and announced a run for state treasurer instead. That’s a curious move for someone who had the backing of Nancy Pelosi, the queen of California’s political machine. If Kounalakis and Harris are walking away from the top job in the bluest state in the union, it raises a serious question: What do they know that we don’t?

The remaining Democrat contenders are a who’s-who of progressive flops. Katie Porter, the far-left darling who couldn’t even crack the top two in her U.S. Senate bid, is still chasing political relevance. Xavier Becerra, Biden’s Health and Human Services secretary, oversaw one of the most heavy-handed bureaucratic responses to COVID—and he wants to bring that same authoritarianism to Sacramento. Tony Thurmond, the state’s superintendent of public instruction, has presided over California’s failing education system, where test scores plummet while schools focus on indoctrination over academics. And then there’s Antonio Villaraigosa, the former L.A. mayor with a mixed record and more political baggage than a cross-country flight.

In other words, it’s a lineup of career politicians, radical ideologues, and bureaucratic lifers. None of them are offering real solutions to California’s problems because they’re the ones who caused them.

Meanwhile, there’s a glimmer of hope on the horizon. On the Republican side, Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco is in the mix—a law-and-order conservative who’s built a reputation on standing up to Sacramento’s soft-on-crime insanity. And longtime conservative voice Steve Hilton is reportedly considering a run. Hilton, a policy-focused outsider with a strong media presence, could be the kind of disruptor California desperately needs.

Let’s not forget Rick Caruso, the billionaire real estate developer who ran a strong campaign for Los Angeles mayor. While technically a Democrat, Caruso has shown flashes of common sense and fiscal responsibility—two qualities in short supply in today’s California Democrat Party. His praise for Kounalakis and hints at a gubernatorial bid suggest he might be testing the waters again. If he runs, he could complicate the crowded field, especially among moderates.

This race is wide open, but the stakes couldn’t be higher. California is a warning sign to the rest of the country. It’s what happens when left-wing ideology replaces leadership, when virtue signaling replaces policy, and when criminals are coddled while taxpayers are punished. The 2026 election is a chance to turn the tide and show that even in deep-blue California, common sense can still win.

President Trump has made it clear that every state matters in the fight to restore American greatness. California may be a long shot, but it’s not unwinnable—especially if Democrats continue to fracture and falter. The fact that some of their biggest names are already bailing out should tell voters everything they need to know.

The people of California deserve better than recycled bureaucrats and failed federal appointees. They deserve leaders who will put public safety, education, and economic freedom first. The race is on—and it’s time for conservatives to step up, speak out, and offer a real alternative to the madness.
