“No state is poised to lose more than the state of California … It’s a serious and sober moment, and I’d be … lying to you if I said it can be quickly undone.”
So declared Governor Gavin Newsom of California with regards to the tariffs implemented by the Trump administration.
Frankly, despite the obviously damaging effects of tariffs in many contexts, California has not exactly been the embodiment of fiscal responsibility.
And the tariffs may well leave California “poised to lose more” than any other state … especially since California is already so notoriously anti-business in the first place.
As reported by The Guardian, Governor Gruesome, in conjunction with State Attorney Rob Bonta, launched a rather predictable, albeit tedious, lawsuit against President Donald Trump’s administration.
And while one might instantly assume that Newsom is suing the Trump administration over ICE deportation policies – which would not be expected at all – this lawsuit actually pertains to tariffs.
Though, in hindsight, the lawsuit actually is not that surprising.
Newsom had previously expressed massive outrage over Trump’s tariffs, declaring how “stupid” he found them to be.
“We talk about own goals. We talk about stupidity … This needs to be updated in the next Wikipedia or the next encyclopedia as a poster child for that,” Newsom raged.
Right. And, apparently beyond convinced of his own beliefs, Newsom launched an ill-advised lawsuit against the Trump administration.
Naturally, Newsom acted in conjunction with one of his many lackeys, who in this case is State Attorney General Rob Bonta.
“The president is yet again acting as if he’s above the law. He isn’t,” Bonta huffed, “Bottom line: Trump doesn’t have the singular power to radically upend the country’s economic landscape. That’s not how our democracy works.”
Unfortunately for Newsom, U.S. District Court Judge Jacqueline Scott Corley was apparently less than impressed by legal arguments regarding “democracy” put forth by Newsom and his pitbull.
On the contrary, Corley “partially [sided] with the Trump administration,” as reported by Politico.
Specifically, Corley did dismiss California’s lawsuit against the Trump administration, arguing that the plaintiffs did not file their lawsuit in the appropriate jurisdiction.
Corley also noted that Newsom and Bonta would need to pursue Trump via U.S. Court of International Trade, which is based in New York.
However, through dismissing the case outright, rather than immediately moving it to the U.S. Trade Court as Trump requested, Corley slightly deferred to the gormless duo of Newsom and Bonta.
Specifically by providing the duo with the legal means of appeal in the future.
Nonetheless, Corley’s judgment is considered a “big blow” to the Californian leaders.
Perhaps the most amusing element of the entire debacle?
Corley was appointed by none other than former President Joe Biden in 2021.
Talk about having a judicial pick come back and bite you.
Especially if the judicial pick was based, at least in part, on DEI characteristics.
Just consider the following media report from all of three years ago.
“73% of Biden judge picks are women; 65% are minorities,” the Daily Journal blared.
The same article also gloated over Biden’s apparent superiority to Trump, adding, “The judicial picks of President Donald Trump, a Republican, were 24% women and 16% minorities.
So, in other words, even a Biden-backed judge basically sided with the Trump administration over Newsom.
What a shrewd politician the California governor is not.
Apparently forgetting that he needs to appeal to people beyond celebrities and illegal immigrants, Newsom apparently thought that launching a bizarre lawsuit against Trump would somehow project him as a strong state leader.
Instead, Newsom appears outwitted, yet again.
In more than one way, Newsom is perhaps more famous for his hair gel usage, rather than his compelling policies … though he does provide a massive array of examples of what not do in policymaking.
For instance, Newsom instituted some of the most draconian COVID laws in the nation – to the extent people could not even attend church – yet he also astonishingly ate dinner, in person, at an exorbitantly expensive, Michelin-starred restaurant.
Not only was Newsom blatantly violating his own policies, but he was doing so quite egregiously and obviously.
As he was reportedly seated with several medical professionals.
You know, the kinds whose opinions were sought to “validate” crazed COVID protocols.
Hand washing? A sensible protocol.
Sudden, seemingly indefinite house arrest via “lockdowns?” Perhaps not such a sensible protocol … especially for Newsom, who clearly enjoyed his lavish meal – likely funded by beleaguered taxpayers.
While all other non-elite Californians were forced to lock down … based on the very advice of “medical professionals” dining shoulder to shoulder with Newsom!
Frankly, any Newsom lawsuit over economics needs to be taken with a massive grain of salt, especially given how happy he has been to nearly run California bankrupt for various reasons.
Including the untold number of benefits received by Democrat “newcomers.”
Not to mention the innumerable casualties of small- and medium-sized businesses during his relentless crackdowns on freedom, not to mention a semblance of normalcy.
Little wonder that Newsom’s own hilarious lawsuit regarding economics fell a bit flat in front of a judge … a Biden-backed judge, no less.
Somewhere on a beach in Delaware, Biden is undoubtedly chuckling, especially following the abysmal treatment he received from his own party.
