The nation’s capital is in dire straits, per President Donald Trump.
And these straits may be attributed to more than the reasons everyone is familiar with – they can also be attributed to problems literally right outside the door in Washington, D.C.
The nation’s capital is currently besieged by a homelessness crisis, which has only augmented in the years since the pandemic.
Naturally, Muriel Bowser, who currently serves as the Washington, D.C. mayor, has quite a bit to answer for as the crisis has unfolded under her watch, which is precisely why Trump has just put her on major notice.
As reported by Fox News, Trump issued a recent warning on Truth Social that made it abundantly clear that Bowser should be laser focused on resolving a major homeless crisis.
“If she is not capable of doing so, we will be forced to do it for her!” Trump wrote, in part. “We want to be proud of our Great Capital again. Thank you, Mayor Bowser for your efforts on behalf of the Citizens of our Country. Hopefully you will be successful!” Trump asserted on Truth Social.
With this post, Trump draws attention to the serious plight that has besieged the nation’s capital for years.
According to a report from USA Facts, varied states, including Hawaii, California, and New York, have some of the highest homelessness rates in the nation.
However, the same report notes that Washington, D.C. is especially bad in this regard.
“In the District of Columbia, comprised entirely of the city of Washington, 80.0 people experienced homelessness for every 10,000,” USA Facts observed.
That means that, with the exception of Hawaii, Washington, D.C. features the highest rate of homelessness in the nation.
While California may have the “absolute” largest number of homeless individuals, it is also the most populous state in the nation.
Therefore, Washington, D.C. actually has a relatively higher rate of homelessness than California when measured in terms of homeless individuals per 10,000: Whereas Washington, D.C. has a homelessness rate of 80.0 per 10,000, California has a homelessness rate of 47.4.
From that perspective, it is abundantly clear that the swamp has yet another serious crisis on its hands … if not literally just outside Capitol Hill itself.
Nationwide, the organization also notes that the rate of homelessness has increased 18 percent from 2023 to 2024, suggesting that even gloomier statistics could be in store for the future of Washington, D.C.
In addition, USA Facts also finds a strong correlation between rent prices and homelessness rates.
Which is also quite logical, given that the lockdown era and other economic disasters have hardly been favorable to people’s paychecks … and wallets.
All that said and done, it is clear that Trump and his team are well aware of the crisis and making a targeted effort to address it.
And, surprisingly, the mayor seems to be on board, or at least she is not openly defying Trump like other sanctuary city mayors have done.
“President Trump and I both want Washington, DC to be the best, most beautiful city in the world and we want the capital city to reflect the strength of our nation,” Bowser mused.
On top of that, Bowser has also softened her position on BLM propaganda.
“Trump’s social media post on Wednesday also comes one day after Bowser announced the city will be replacing its controversial Black Lives Matter Plaza with murals by students and artists as part of DC’s America 250 project ahead of the country’s 250th anniversary next year,” Fox News noted.
Interesting development.
With any luck, hopefully cooperation will occur before outright conflict.
